Friends on the PlayStation Network are online users who have mutually agreed to add and follow each other. To become friends, one of the users must send a friend request to the other, sent through the PSN messaging system. Once the request has been made, the second user must then accept it. As friends, each user can then see if the other is online, and what game they may be playing. On PlayStation 4, there is also an activity feed that gives highlights of friends' activities.

In PlayStation Home, users could become friends by either selecting their avatar with ✕ and selecting "Request Friend", or in chat by selecting one of their messages. Friends could be identified by an icon to the right of their username. The player could invite a friend to come to wherever they were located, or go to a friend's location themselves (as long as the user, nor their friend, was not in another user's personal space).
