PlayStation 3 is the third system in the PlayStation console line. It is the second home console to use the XrossMediaBar system software. Released to the public on November 11, 2006 in Japan, November 17, 2006 in North America and March 23, 2007 in Europe and Australia, it is the first PlayStation console to have a wireless controller as a default controller. The original model of the PS3 was what most call the 'fat' model. The PS3 is also the first console to play Blu-Ray Discs.The PlayStation 3 was Backwards Compatible with PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 Games but they took the backwards compatibility out of the PS3 because they wanted to cut some costs so 20 gb models with CECHBxx and 60 gb PS3s with CECHAxx have full backwards compatibility with the PS2 and 80 gb models with CECHExx have emulation with the PS2. Any other model without the serial number is only backwards compatible with the PS1. Every PS3 is backwards compatible with the PS1
A newer model was released called the PS3 Slim was released in most countries by September 2009 and replaced the previous typeface, evoking the older typeface the PlayStation 2 had. It is a smaller and thinner version of the PS3, with decreased power consumption, and a quieter cooling system.
The newest PS3 model, the PS3 SuperSlim is a very thin version of the PS3. It is the only version of the PS3 to have a slide feature to allow discs to be put in.
